The work of local artists is showcased here giving the hotel a distinctive feel.

What are the rooms like? The 11 rooms vary in size and hue, from cosy and functional singles to almost palatial four-poster bed deluxe rooms, decorated in regal red. Even the more compact rooms feel uncluttered – the owners have gone with a ‘less is more’ philosophy on furniture.

The bed test: Comfortable with white cotton bed linen, vibrant throws and cushions.

The bathroom: Some ensuites are new with stone floors and plush new shower units, others are slightly older, but all are clean and smart with aromatherapy toiletries, plump white towels and waffle-effect bathrobes.

Breakfast: Full English breakfast or vegetarian alternative. Traditional and homely dining room – Radio 2 wafts in the background.

What is there to do nearby? Huge variety of good quality restaurants and bars and a wealth of bohemian and independent shops in the Lanes and North Laine. The annual Brighton Festival runs until May 29.

How much a night? from £125 for a classic double and from £180 a four-poster bed. Breakfast included.

Read the full review on the Guardian website.

Even thought it is extremely stylised – black-and-white tiling on the floor, bright red doorframes – and is home to more pieces of modern art than your average art gallery – there are only 12 rooms so there is a real homely and intimate feel. This is only emphasised by the warm welcome you’ll receive from Andy and Tracy Hill who really can’t do enough to make sure your stay is enjoyable.

It soon became obvious why (The) Claremont has received VisitBritain’s five-diamond award for outstanding accommodation. Each of the bedrooms has been individually styled to the highest standard, with huge beds (some four-poster), comfortable furniture and wide screen TV.

Little touches like the bottle of wine on arrival, luxury Gilchrist & Soames toiletries and huge bathrobes all add to the experience, and in the morning prepare to be coaxed downstairs by the smell of bacon and the promise of a delicious breakfast.
